Text 5 Sep 1 note I Care Too Much About College Football (Week One)

Hey, the first week of college football is finally over.  We still don’t know shit, except that it rained a whole bunch and some top 25 teams got beat, so let’s see what happened…

#1 Oklahoma beat Tulsa 47-14

Oklahoma looked like the #1 team in the nation so far.  Unless you want to give it to LSU, but I’ll get to that later.  Landry Jones and Ryan Broyles are going to have huge numbers this year and Jones started with 375 yards in the air and Broyles had 158 receiving.  The surprise of the game was Dominique Whaley, who ran for 131 yards and four touchdowns.  The defense also looked good.  That’s the 37th game in a row they’ve won at home.  I am looking forward to their game with Florida State on the 17th.

#2 Alabama beat Kent State 48-7

Alabama’s defense looked good as expected but AJ McCarron and Phillip Sims had two interceptions a piece.  They play Penn State next week, who also have quarterback issues.  I’ve read that people think Alabama looked legit, but I’m not sold yet.  I am sold on Marquiz Maze and Trent Richardson though.  They probably have enough weapons… and Penn State’s O line won’t be able to do much.

#3 Oregon LOST to #4 LSU 40-27

This sure isn’t good for Oregon or the Heisman chances of LaMichael James or Darron Thomas.  So they’re no longer elite… I just don’t know if Oregon beat themselves with turnovers or if LSU’s defense is that good.  Or if the drama at LSU will be too much for their BCS ambitions.  Jarrett Lee did a good enough job replacing Jordan Jefferson as LSU’s quarterback.  This should be intereting.

#5 Boise State beat #19 Georgia 35-21

Another opening day victory for Boise against a marquee opponent.  And another strong performance for Kellen Moore - 261 yards and 3 TDs.  They should run the table.  Georgia is in trouble and so is Mark Richt.  They play South Carolina next week.

#6 Florida State beat Louisiana-Monroe 34-0

Well, it looks like the defense is going to be the star of FSU, not necessarily their quarterback EJ Manuel, who had 252 yards and 2 touchdowns, but looked shaky at times.  Greg Reid on the other hand, could be a human highlight reel as a cornerback and punt returner.

#7 Stanford beat San Jose State 57-3

Andrew Luck is good at football.  He connected with 7 different receivers but San Jose State turnovers kept them in good field position, which is why his numbers are relatively low.

#8 Texas A&M beat Southern Methodist 46-14

Yes, they’re leaving the Big 12.  An I don’t know how many teams will miss them since they have so many offensive weapons and a great O line.  Cyrus Gray had 2 touchdowns and 132 yards rushing.  Christine Michael had 85 yards and 2 more TDs.  Ryan Tannehill had 246 yards passing and 2 TDs as well.

#9 Oklahoma State beat Louisiana Lafayette 61-34

Brandon Weeden threw for 388 yards and 3 touchdowns, despite having two interceptions.  Justin Blckmon had 144 yards receiving and Joseph Randle rushed for 129 yards and two scores.  Their offense is bonkers, but I’m curious to see if they have the defense to stop a team like Oklahoma.

#10 Nebraska beat Chattanooga 40-7

Taylor Martinez is fast.  He ran for 135 yards and 3 touchdowns, while passing for 116 yards.

#11 Wisconsin beat UNLV 51-17

Last year I made fun of Wisconsin for not having the juggernaut offense they were predicted to have.  This year might be different.  Montee Ball had four touchdowns.  Russell Wilson had 255 yards in the air and 62 on the ground.  That O line looked good.

#12 South Carolina beat East Carolina 56-37

So… Stephen Garcia earned his job back off the bench and Marcus Lattimore had 112 yards rushing and 3 touchdowns.  But they still looked sloppy.  That’s good news for Georgia next week.

#13 Virginia Tech beat Appalachain St. 66-13.

David Wilson rushed for 162 yards on only 16 carries.

#14 TCU LOST to Baylor 50-48

The story in’t that this isn’t the same TCU team as the last two years.  Obviously the defense isn’t.  The story is Robert Griffin III of Baylor.  He had 359 yards passing and 5 touchdowns.  This will probably get Baylor a ranking.

#15 Arkansas beat Missouri State 51-7.

With Knile Davis out for the season, they couldn’t establish a running game, but Tyler Wilson was efficient at quarterback.  The better news is that the defense looked great and Joe Adams had 2 punt returns for touchdowns.

#16 Notre Dame LOST to South Florida 23-20.

It looks like USF is an actual player, so all hope isn’t lost for Notre Dame, who had a lot of turnovers.  The bad news is Dayne Crist not playing well and Michigan is next week.

#17 Michigan State beat Youngstown State 28-6

Kirk Cousins threw for 222 yards, but they didn’t think they looked especially good.  I agree.

#18 Ohio State beat Akron 42-0.

So it looks like Joe Bauserman is going to be good enough at quarterback and the team is going to have enough talent to overcome their scandals.  That’s too bad.

#20 Mississippi State beat Memphis 59-14

Memphis is bad, but Mississippi State still looked legit.  Vick Ballard rushed for 166 yards and 3 touchdowns.  Chris Relf had 202 passing and 2 TD.

#21 Missouri beat Miami (OH) 17-6

Yikes.  James Franklin didn’t think he played well.  The team made a lot of mistakes and they play an Arizona State team next week that I’m not sure why isn’t ranked in the first place.

#22 Florida beat Florida Atlantic 41-3

John Brantley has an offense that works for him, even though he still had 2 interceptions.  The defense looks good and Jeff Demps ran for 105 yards and 2 touchdowns.

#23 Auburn beat Utah State 42-38

So yeah… Auburn didn’t play well, but this is how the season seemed to start off last year as well.  Barrett Trotter had 261 yards and 3 touchdowns.  I still don’t have high expectations because they lost something like 30 players and have 20 new starters.

#24 West Virginia beat Marshall 34-13

The game was shortened because of weather issues, but Geno Smith still had 249 yards passing.

#25 USC beat Minnesota 19-17

I don’t know if this means Minnesota could be decent or if USC just sucked in the second half.  Robert Woods had 177 yards receiving and three touchdowns.  Matt Barkley passed for 304 yards.

WHO COULD GET RANKED:

Besides Baylor and South Florida, Texas and Garrett Gilbert seem to be better than last year.  I like Arizona State (who return 19 starters), but think they’ll have a chance to prove themselves against Missouri.  And I don’t know if anyone noticed this, but UCF beat Charleston Southern 62-0.
